Aisha Yesufu Criticizes Judiciary for Undermining Nigeria’s Democracy Following Appeal Court’s Removal of Kano Governor rights activist Aisha Yesufu has expressed her concern that the judiciary is endangering Nigeria’s democratic system.

She made these remarks in response to the Appeal Court’s decision to remove the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Recalling the ruling, a three-member panel of judges led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay invalidated Yusuf’s election. The court declared 165,663 votes for Yusuf as invalid due to the absence of signatures or stamps from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

As a result, the governor’s vote count, who ran under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), was reduced to 853,939, while the votes for Nasir Ganuwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) remained at 890,705.

Subsequently, the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Court nullified Yusuf’s election and declared Gawuna, the APC governorship candidate, as the true winner of the March 18 election.

In her reaction, Yesufu expressed her views, stating, “The judiciary is truly on the path of completely destroying democracy in Nigeria. In 2019, the people of Kano rejected the APC, yet electoral fraud occurred, and now this again.”

“When the legitimate will of the people is disregarded, it paves the way for the exercise of illegitimate will,” she added.
