Aisha Yesufu, a social critic and human rights activist, has raised allegations that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is overcharging students for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Yesufu expressed concerns that JAMB’s practices may be exacerbating educational inequalities by exploiting financially disadvantaged students.

In a post on her social media handle, Yesufu emphasized that JAMB should not function as a profit-oriented organization. Her remarks were prompted by Vice President Kashim Shettima’s statement that JAMB Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede generated over N50 billion for the Federal Government in a year.

Shettima made the comment during a public engagement organized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He highlighted the issue of corruption in the public sector and noted that JAMB had never generated up to $1 million for the Federal Government before Oloyede assumed office.

However, Yesufu expressed dissatisfaction with Shettima’s statement, suggesting that JAMB may be imposing excessive fees on Nigerian students. She stated, “JAMB is not supposed to be a money-making organization. JAMB making 50 billion means JAMB is overcharging students. I will even call it extortion of poor and vulnerable students and widening the educational inequality gap.”
