The Nigerian Army has reported that soldiers from the 34 Artillery Brigade, operating within the jurisdiction of the 82 Division, successfully thwarted an assault orchestrated by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their armed counterpart, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), against their Forward Operating Base situated at Ukwuorji, along the Owerri-Onitsha expressway.

Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, shared these details in an official statement released on Tuesday. According to him, the secessionist fighters attempted their assault on August 20, 2023. However, their efforts were met with defeat as they encountered the superior firepower and vigilance of the troops stationed there.

As outlined in the statement, the troops managed to neutralise one of the fighters, while two others were apprehended, leaving the remaining attackers to flee. The troops were able to seize significant items, including a vehicle, a mobile phone, a machete, nine expended 7.62 mm special ammunition cases, and an expended 12.7mm ammunition case.

In a separate development, as a result of the assertive combat operations against insurgents in the Northeast, a solitary Boko Haram fighter along with his wife willingly surrendered to the troops stationed at the 26 Task Force Brigade Garrison in Gwoza.

The official statement indicates that among the possessions recovered from the Boko Haram fighter who chose to surrender to the troops were an AK-47 rifle and ten live rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
