The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic in Ilaro, Ogun State, Mukail Akinde, has confirmed the expulsion of Susan Isoyo, a female student who was apprehended by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) ten months ago.

During a media briefing to announce the institution’s combined 2024 convocation ceremony, the rector made this announcement.

It should be noted that Isoyo was arrested by NDLEA operatives in April 2023 on charges of engaging in the sale of illicit drugs. She was found in possession of codeine-based cough syrup and 283 grams of cannabis.

After Isoyo was released by the NDLEA, the polytechnic conducted an internal investigation and found her guilty of the charges. As a result, she was expelled from the institution.

Addressing the press on the matter, the rector emphasized the polytechnic’s commitment to maintaining its reputation and avoiding any form of disrepute.

Akinde stated, “When the news went viral, we did not rush to take action because we have our own internal regulations, and there are laws that govern activities outside the campus. We are not in control of external laws.”

“We allowed the law enforcement agencies to complete their processes, after which we initiated our internal disciplinary procedures. I can confirm that the student is no longer enrolled in our institution. She has been expelled,” he added.

Regarding preventive measures, the rector mentioned that the polytechnic has implemented routine drug testing for students. He vowed that any student found with traces of hard drugs would be immediately expelled from the institution.

“We have a policy in place that allows us to conduct drug tests on our students whenever we observe any suspicious behavior. If we detect any traces of hard drugs in a student, we expel them without considering their background,” Akinde stated.

He also acknowledged that this policy has greatly helped in curbing cultism on the campus. The rector expressed gratitude to the traditional ruler, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, for his support in combating cultism and other social vices on the campus.
