The federal government has announced its plans to create 340,000 jobs by 2030 and 840,000 jobs by 2060 through the transition to renewable energy in Nigeria.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, made this statement during the second edition of the German-Nigerian Symposium on Green Energy.

Adelabu emphasized that the energy transition would not only lead to economic development but also provide quality power supply and significant job opportunities. The government aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 and reduce reliance on diesel and petrol generators by expanding power generation in the country.

“Nigeria is committed to delivering adequate renewable and affordable power to its citizens in a sustainable manner. The implementation of Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan (ETP) will not only provide economic development but also result in significant job creation with up to 340,000 jobs by the year 2030 and 840,000 by 2060,” stated Adelabu.

The minister highlighted the role of gas in Nigeria’s transition and expressed that the ETP would create investment opportunities in solar energy, green hydrogen, and electric vehicles.

He mentioned that the country requires $1.9 trillion to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 and has identified a $32 billion investment opportunity for energy transition programs and projects.

Adelabu further noted that due to insufficient generation and grid limitations, many households, businesses, and industries in Nigeria currently rely on diesel and petrol generators for electricity.

The German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Günther, affirmed the commitment of Germany and Nigeria to promote the production and use of hydrogen. She highlighted the energy partnership between the two nations, emphasizing the importance of hydrogen as a future energy source.

Dr. Markus Wagner, the Country Director of GIZ Nigeria & ECOWAS, highlighted the potential of green hydrogen to revolutionize the energy landscape. He emphasized that green hydrogen offers opportunities to reduce carbon emissions, diversify energy sources, and stimulate economic growth.
