The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recently filed a new set of 26 charges against Mr. Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). These charges revolve around allegations of abuse of office and corruption.

Mr. Emefiele is scheduled to appear before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos High Court in Ikeja on Monday, April 8. The charges against him include accusations of accepting gratification, receiving gifts through intermediaries, engaging in corrupt practices, fraudulently acquiring property, and bestowing corrupt advantages upon his associates. These actions are in violation of the Corrupt Practices Act of 2000.

As reported by Channels Television, the EFCC Prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, filed the new charges on April 3.

One of the counts in the charge states, “That you, Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, between 2022 and 2023, in Lagos, abused the authority of your office as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, by directing an arbitrary act, namely allocating foreign exchange amounting to $2,136,391,737.33 (two billion, one hundred and thirty-six million, three hundred and ninety-one thousand, seven hundred and thirty-seven dollars, thirty-three cents) without following proper bidding procedures, which was detrimental to the rights of Nigerians.”
