Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, was reportedly released from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday, only to be taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Although the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, stated that he had not yet received any briefing on the matter when contacted by DAILY POST, media reports suggest that Emefiele is currently undergoing interrogation at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.

Emefiele had been in DSS custody since June following his suspension by President Bola Tinubu. The DSS had stated that Emefiele was being held for investigative reasons.

In July, Emefiele appeared before a Federal High Court in Lagos, where he faced a two-count charge related to the “illegal possession” of firearms. He was granted bail in the amount of N20 million.

The Federal Government later withdrew the two-count charge on August 17, leading to its dismissal. However, Emefiele faced an additional 20 charges accusing him of conspiracy to engage in procurement fraud and other illegal activities.

On September 22, the CBN officially confirmed Emefiele’s resignation following the appointment and confirmation of Olayemi Cardoso as the substantive governor of the central bank.
