The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed its concern over the role of frivolous court judgments in its inability to secure convictions in corruption cases, including high-profile ones.

This observation was shared by the EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwajaren, during an interview with journalists in Kaduna State.

Uwajaren shed light on some of the challenges that have hindered the swift prosecution of corruption cases and the successful attainment of convictions. He highlighted that the losses experienced by the EFCC were primarily a result of court judgments that appeared to prioritize technicalities over the actual facts and national interests. Additionally, he pointed out the issue of frequent and arbitrary adjournments in corruption cases as a contributing factor.

Despite these challenges, Uwajaren also noted that the commission achieved approximately 7,700 convictions nationwide in the year 2022. This demonstrates the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption in the country despite the hurdles it faces.
