In response to the escalating security concerns in Zamfara State, the government has announced the immediate closure of specific cattle markets situated in five local government areas across the region.

This significant decision was communicated through a press statement issued by the Commissioner of Information, Mu’azu Mannir Hiadara.

The affected cattle markets include Danjibga and Kunchin Kalgo in Tsafe Local Government Area, Bagega and Wuya cattle markets in Anka, Dangulbi and Dansadau in Maru, Dauran in Zurmi, and Nasarawar Burkullu in Bukkuyim Local Government Area. The rationale behind temporarily shutting down these markets stems from the troubling trend of armed bandits engaging in the sale and transportation of rustled cattle, which poses a serious threat to security and stability.

This strategic move was taken following discussions and deliberations during the State Security Council Meeting held at the Council Chamber in Gusau, the State capital. It reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of cattle rustling and the associated security challenges within the affected local government areas. The closure of these markets aims to disrupt the activities of these criminal elements and enhance the overall security situation in Zamfara State.

“With this development, the council members, however, call on security agencies and the Directorate of Animal Health and Livestock Development to ensure strict compliance with the measures,” the statement read. 

The government also provided assurance to the general public and relevant stakeholders that they would actively monitor and assess the situation’s development in order to work towards reestablishing peace and security within the impacted markets.
