Today, the Supreme Court will hear the appeal filed by Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), over his prolonged detention at the Department of State Services (DSS). Kanu filed the appeal on November 3, 2022, after the Court of Appeal’s decision halted his release from the DSS custody. He appealed against the Court of Appeal’s October 28, 2022, ruling that stayed the execution of its earlier order, acquitting him of all charges and directing his release from the custody of the secret police.

In a statement issued on Thursday by IPOB’s lead counsel, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, he expressed optimism that the grace of God would “prevail in judgment over today’s outing at the Supreme Court.” The statement also informed that the appeal would be heard on Thursday morning.

The statement further reads that the Supreme Court of Nigeria would hear the appeal over the continued illegal detention of their client, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. It is noteworthy that Kanu’s detention has been a subject of controversy, with many individuals and groups, including IPOB, calling for his release. The outcome of the appeal at the Supreme Court will determine whether Kanu will be released or remain in custody.

The statement reads partly, “Please be informed, Ezigbo Umuchineke, that the Supreme Court of Nigeria will this morning, hear Appeal over the continued illegal detention of our indefatigable Client – Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“We are very firm in our belief that the Almighty Chukwu Okike Abiama will take absolute control of today’s proceedings.

“We shall keep you all updated on the outcome of the legal fireworks that will ensue in the court today.

“Thank you all, Ezigbo Umu Chineke, and remain blessed”.
