Ayodele Fayose, former Governor of Ekiti state, has expressed his belief that President Bola Tinubu’s announcement to remove fuel subsidy is an attempt to bring stability to Nigeria. Fayose commended Tinubu’s decision, considering it to be the most prudent and wise choice.

However, within a short span of 24 hours after the announcement, the price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) surged to N600 per litre from its previous rate of N195/l, leading to a 100% increase in transportation fares and the resurgence of long queues at fuel stations across major cities like Lagos, Abuja, Ilorin, Benin, Asaba, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Makurdi.

Taking to his Twitter handle, Fayose shared his thoughts on the removal of fuel subsidy, stating his conviction that President Tinubu has made a decision that is in the best interest of Nigeria and its people.

“He promised to remove the subsidy, he never hid it. Most importantly, too, the immediate past govt already removed fuel subsidy technically by not making provision for it in the 2023 budget.

“I appeal to Nigerians to bear with the government for now as the present hardship will ease out with time. Removing the fuel subsidy is the best thing to do and it has to be done once and for all.

“Unfortunately, the subsidy regime has only been benefiting a few people in the oil industry and Nigeria must break this chain once and for all.”
