The Federal Government has taken a significant step towards enhancing governance efficiency and reducing the cost of governance by inaugurating the Committee on the implementation and review of reports and White Papers on the Restructuring and Rationalisation of Federal Government Parastatals, Agencies, and Commissions, popularly known as the Steve Oronsaye Report.

The committee, headed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume, was inaugurated on Thursday on behalf of President Bola Tinubu. The Oronsaye report aims to streamline government operations and improve efficiency.

According to a statement by the Director of Information at the Office of the SGF, Segun Imohiosen, Tinubu has given the committee a 12-week deadline to submit its report. The implementation of the report’s recommendations will involve merging, relocating, subsuming, or scrapping certain Parastatals, Agencies, and Commissions to reduce the cost of governance and enhance efficiency across the governance value chain.

The approval for implementing the Oronsaye report comes twelve years after its submission, following multiple attempts to implement its recommendations.

The committee comprises esteemed members such as the Attorney General of the Federation/Minister of Justice, the Minister of Budget & Economic Planning, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the Special Adviser to the President for Policy & Coordination, the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reform, and other prominent officials.

The committee’s general guidelines include reviewing current mandates, identifying redundancies and overlaps, defining strategic objectives aligned with government priorities, engaging stakeholders for input, drafting revised mandates, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, obtaining necessary approvals, communicating changes to employees and stakeholders, and monitoring implementation for any challenges that may arise.
