Nigeria’s President-elect, Bola Tinubu, has called for a police investigation into the supplementary governorship election in Adamawa. On Tuesday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Ahmadu Fintiri as the winner of the election with 430,861 votes, while Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), scored 398,788 votes.

Controversy ensued when Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, declared Binani as the winner of the election prior to the announcement by the electoral umpire, which subsequently voided his declaration.

In a statement on Wednesday, Tinubu called for a thorough investigation into “all that transpired” during the election.

“The supplementary polls have now brought the 2023 elections to a final, fitting conclusion. I observed, with satisfaction, the largely peaceful atmosphere that pervaded the supplementary election on Saturday. It was a further testimony that our citizens have accepted democratic norms and have unalloyed faith in the electoral process,” he said.
