The Southern Caucus of the House of Representatives has expressed deep sorrow following the demise of former Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu.

In a statement released on Thursday by the Caucus Secretary, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, under the leadership of Hon. Nicholas Mutu, Akeredolu was described as an “intellectual and a courageous voice of reason” whose unwavering stance on societal and national issues was widely respected.

The lawmakers extended their condolences to the Ondo State Government, federal lawmakers from the state, and the immediate family of the deceased.

According to the statement, “Aketi,” as he was affectionately known, made significant contributions to Nigeria’s legal profession and democracy. He was praised for his passion, grace, and fearlessness in serving his people.

The statement further highlighted Akeredolu’s commitment to advocating for the rights and interests of the Yoruba race, the southern region, and his constituents in Ondo. He was recognized as a tireless advocate for equity and fairness in the Nigerian system until his passing.

The lawmakers expressed their belief that Akeredolu’s absence would be deeply felt by the nation, describing his loss as that of a warrior, a courageous fighter, and a prominent figure in the legal profession.

As a caucus, they offered prayers for strength and solace to Akeredolu’s family in coping with the painful loss of their remarkable leader, family man, and father. They wished for his soul to find eternal peace in the embrace of his creator.

It should be noted that Akeredolu passed away in Germany on Wednesday after battling a prolonged illness. Subsequently, his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, was sworn in as the new governor of the state.
