Lassine Sinayoko netted his third goal in the Africa Cup of Nations, propelling Mali into the quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over Burkina Faso on Monday.

Mali took an early lead with an own goal from Edmond Tapsoba in the last-16 tie, and Sinayoko of Auxerre doubled the advantage just after halftime.

Despite Bertrand Traore narrowing the margin with a penalty for Burkina Faso, Mali secured the win, even though a second goal for Burkina Faso was disallowed for offside.

Mali, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time since 2013, will face hosts Ivory Coast in Bouake on Saturday. They aim for a spot in the semi-finals.

In the later last-16 match, 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco will face South Africa in San-Pedro.

Premier League players Yves Bissouma of Tottenham Hotspur and Dango Ouattara of Bournemouth began the game on the bench for Mali and Burkina Faso, respectively.

Mali made six changes from the team that drew 0-0 with Namibia to top Group E, including a new four-man midfield. Burkina Faso, Group D runners-up, made four changes from the squad beaten 2-0 by Angola, with Bertrand Traore as the captain.

This encounter marked only the second meeting between the west African neighbours in the Cup of Nations, with Mali winning a group match 3-1 in Tunisia 20 years ago.
