The Super Eagles of Nigeria, along with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, expressed their disappointment over their loss to Ivory Coast in the 2023 AFCON final.
In Sunday’s highly anticipated final, Nigeria faced Ivory Coast with high hopes, especially as they remained undefeated leading up to the match.
Despite initially taking the lead with a goal from William Troost-Ekong, Nigeria couldn’t maintain their advantage. Ivory Coast mounted a strong comeback in the second half, scoring two goals to secure a 2-1 victory.
The Super Eagles’ defensive lapses led to both goals, causing frustration and disappointment for the team and their supporters.
In response to the defeat, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali took to Instagram to apologize to Nigerians for the team’s performance, acknowledging the disappointment felt by fans and taking full responsibility for the outcome.
Additionally, the official Super Eagles page on X expressed their disappointment at losing the AFCON title but acknowledged their efforts by stating, “Disappointed, yet we make do with the Silver Medal.”
