Senator Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker and prominent social critic, has voiced his concerns about the proposal to establish state police in the country, warning that it could lead to anarchy.

In a post on his social media handle, Sani expressed his opinion that the notion of state police solving all of the security challenges in the country is illusory.

The Federal Government had recently indicated the possibility of embracing state police, following an emergency meeting between President Bola Tinubu and state governors at the Aso Rock Villa. The meeting was called in response to the surge in food prices, economic hardships, and pockets of insecurity experienced nationwide.

However, the former lawmaker is apprehensive that state police would essentially become an armed extension of the ruling party in each state. He argued that the military, police, and civil defense already exist to address security issues, questioning the unique capabilities that state police could bring to the table.
