Seun Kuti brought before Lagos court on charges of assaulting a policeman

On Tuesday, Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti appeared before a Magistrate’s court in Yaba, Lagos State, as the defendant in a case.

The charge against Kuti pertains to the assault of a police officer, which is a violation of Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.

The police prosecutor, S. A Adebese, requested that the court remand Kuti for 21 days pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

In response, the defense counsel led by Femi Falana, SAN, pleaded with the court not to remand his client, explaining that he was unaware of the remand application.

The incident involving Seun Kuti assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State gained widespread attention after a viral video surfaced on Saturday.

Following an arrest order from the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, Kuti voluntarily turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja on Monday.

Subsequently, he was transferred to the state’s Criminal Investigation Department at Panti, Lagos.
