The trial of Seun Kuti, an Afrobeat Musician, has faced further delays due to the absence of Chief Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun from the Yaba Magistrates’s court. In her place, the registrar, Mr Babalola, adjourned the case until September 27, 2023, to allow for the continuation of the proceedings.

Magistrate Olatunbosun was on administrative leave and was not present in court on the day.

Previously, it was reported by Vistanaij Media that the Lagos State Police Command had brought charges against Seun Kuti on May 16, 2023. The specific charge was assault on a police officer, which is a violation of Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.

However, on May 24, Magistrate Olatunbosun ruled that the police could not act as both the complainant and the prosecutor in the case. As a result, she requested the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to proceed with the prosecution. 

She said, “I need the advice of the DPP to know whether he should be prosecuted or not.”
