Sanusi Emotional as He Discloses Wigwe’s Supportive Gesture After Kano Emir Deposition

Alhaji Lamido Sanusi II, the former Emir of Kano, couldn’t hold back his tears as he paid tribute to Herbert Wigwe, the former Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, during a night of tribute event. Sanusi also revealed a touching gesture by Wigwe after his dethronement as Emir of Kano several years ago by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

In a voice filled with emotion, Sanusi expressed his deep gratitude towards Wigwe, stating, “I was thinking I would die and leave Herbert. We have all heard about him, about his loyalty.” Sanusi went on to share a heartfelt conversation he had with Wigwe prior to his removal from the throne. He recounted saying, “Herbert, I know you’re doing your best to solve all these problems, but I’m convinced that this is what is going to happen.” In response, Wigwe assured him, “Your Highness, don’t worry. Whatever happens, don’t worry. We are here for you.”

Sanusi continued by recounting the day he received the news of his dethronement. He immediately reached out to Wigwe, expressing his desire to go to Lagos. To his surprise, within hours, Wigwe had arranged a plane to transport Sanusi’s family to Lagos, ensuring their safety and comfort. Sanusi expressed his gratitude, stating, “The plan then was to take me into exile for many years. I put my family on that plane and sent them to Lagos, with no phone calls. Herbert received them and put them in a hotel. Later, he got them accommodation. For months, when I came, they stayed there. Your Highness, if you want to travel, just call Shola.”

Sanusi also highlighted the pivotal role played by Herbert Wigwe and his partner, Aig Imoukhuede, during his tenure at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). He acknowledged their assistance in resolving a significant banking sector challenge at that time.

The heartfelt tribute by Sanusi underscored the profound impact of Wigwe’s unwavering support during a challenging period in his life, emphasizing the strength of their bond and friendship.
