Following the murder of Daniel Adefemi Okunade, a staff member of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has assumed jurisdiction over the investigation.

Okunade, a high-ranking officer in the Internal Audit Department of CBN, was fatally shot in the head by suspected assassins while returning from work.

The incident occurred at the Wisdom Supermarket, also known as Abdullahi Supermarket, located in the Koroduma Community of Nasarawa State, near Abuja, where Okunade had gone to purchase bread and other items for his family.

Although the Nasarawa State Police had initially taken charge of the case, it has been reported that the IGP took over the investigation at the request of the CBN management. Additionally, the CBN is arranging to move Okunade’s body from the Mararaba Medical Center in Mararaba to Asokoro General Hospital in Abuja for security reasons.

Upon the IGP’s intervention, crack detectives from the Force Headquarters in Abuja were promptly deployed to the crime scene. They interrogated the supermarket’s manager and reviewed the CCTV camera footage to gather crucial information and leads in identifying and locating the culprits.

Among the victims of the incident, three individuals besides the CBN staff have yet to be identified. One of them is reported to be a staff member of the Federal High Court in Abuja, although the name has been withheld for security purposes.

The CBN expressed serious concerns and suspicions regarding the killing, as the assailants did not touch the deceased’s Toyota Venza car parked outside the supermarket. The gunmen reportedly searched Okunade after shooting him before swiftly leaving upon confirming his identity as their target.

Apart from being a CBN staff member, Okunade, who hailed from Iree town near Osogbo in Osun State, was also the choirmaster of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Koroduma Community, known as One Man Village.

As of now, the supermarket remains locked to preserve potential evidence. The Commissioner of Police (CP) in Nasarawa State, Mr. Umar Shehu Nadada, along with his deputy in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, is collaborating with operatives from Abuja to conduct a comprehensive investigation and apprehend the perpetrators of the crime.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Nasarawa State Police Command, DSP Ranham Nansel, confirmed the incident, stating that four customers were shot and killed by the hoodlums who attacked the supermarket on the evening of January 2, 2024.
