The Public Relations Officer of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Abiodun Olanrewaju, has issued a warning to students about the excessive use of commercial motorcycles, commonly known as Okada, as a means of transportation.

The caution comes in the wake of the tragic death of Chisom Nwankwo, a final year student in the Department of Agric Economics. Nwankwo lost her life when the commercial motorcyclist she was riding with lost control at the scene of another accident on Tuesday morning.

According to Olanrewaju, the commercial motorcyclist was found to be careless and had lost concentration while observing another minor accident, leading to a collision with a bus from the rear.

The OAU spokesperson emphasized the need to warn Okada riders, as they have something to hold on to for support, unlike the passengers. He pointed out that passengers are more vulnerable in Okada accidents, which is why they should avoid chatting on their phones during rides. Olanrewaju highlighted instances where passengers, particularly young boys and girls, would be engrossed in their phones and unaware of what is happening in front of them. He stressed the importance of being alert and prepared, as accidents can occur suddenly.

Olanrewaju further disclosed that the university has been in contact with the family of the deceased student, expressing condolences and offering support. The cautionary message serves as a reminder for students to prioritize their safety and exercise caution while using commercial motorcycles for transportation.
