Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), located in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has categorically denied allegations of issuing mining licenses or entering into lease agreements with illegal miners operating on the university campus.

In an official statement released by the university’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution refuted the claims and clarified its position on the matter. The statement, obtained by Vistanaij Media in Osogbo, emphasized that the university promptly reported the illegal mining activities to the relevant government authorities upon discovering them.

Olarewaju further highlighted that the university wanted to make it clear to the public that the assertions made by the illegal miners, claiming to have the institution’s consent to mine on its land, were entirely false.

The statement read, “The University Administration has been made aware that certain individuals, groups, and companies have made assertions that they possess licenses to engage in mining activities on the University land in Ile-Ife, and that they have obtained the University’s consent in the form of leases and agreements for such purposes.

“While the University has already filed an official complaint with the appropriate government authorities regarding the illegal activities of these miners, it is crucial to inform the general public that these trespassers’ claims are entirely baseless.

“Therefore, the University would like to use this opportunity to notify the public, particularly our alumni and other stakeholders, that the University did not grant any consent to individuals, groups, companies, or associations to obtain licenses for mining activities on its land.

“Furthermore, the University has not signed any agreements with any individuals, companies, or groups for the purpose of mining activities on its land.

“We assure concerned members of the University community, stakeholders, and the general public that the University is taking all necessary legal measures to halt the activities of these trespassers, which pose a severe environmental hazard to the University estate and are highly embarrassing.”

The statement serves to dispel any misconceptions and reaffirm the university’s commitment to addressing the illegal mining issue, ensuring the protection of its environment, and preserving its reputation.
