The Senate announced on Wednesday that the leadership of the National Assembly will engage in discussions with President Bola Tinubu to address the issue of killings and widespread insecurity across the country. This meeting aims to review resolutions and recommendations put forth by the eighth, ninth, and tenth assemblies.

The decision to hold this meeting was reached following the adoption of a motion during a plenary session. The motion, titled “Continued killings by suspected terrorists parading as herdsmen and increasing insecurity in Kwande, Ukum, Logo, and Katsina Ala local government areas of Benue,” was sponsored by Senator Emmamuel Udende from Benue State, representing the APC party.

During the debate, Senator Udende expressed sadness over the recent attacks by terrorists, resulting in the death of at least 50 individuals in various communities across Kwande, Ukum, Logo, and Katsina Ala local government areas of Benue. The affected communities, some of which were attacked on March 5, include Tyuluv, Borikyo, Kundav, Ugbaam, Uyam, Udedeku, Yaaiwa, Nyihemba, Tomatar, Menakwagh, Yiase, and Agura, all located in the Benue North-East senatorial district.

Senator Udende highlighted the alarming frequency of attacks, with heavily armed terrorists targeting residents on a daily basis. Many homes have been completely destroyed, numerous residents are missing, and the perpetrators remain at large.

The dire situation has forced women, children, and the elderly to trek long distances in search of safe havens while awaiting the intervention of security forces. The ongoing insecurity has also had a significant negative impact on the local economy, leading to a scarcity of agricultural produce and contributing to increased inflation.

Despite previous resolutions by the National Assembly and public outcry against the activities of these terrorists, their actions have persisted. In response, the Senate passed further resolutions, urging the Service Chiefs, Inspector General of Police, and heads of other security agencies to swiftly deploy security personnel to address the continuing attacks by terrorists in the affected communities.

Recent reports indicate that approximately 50 individuals were killed in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State on Tuesday due to clashes between two militia groups.
