The city of Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, witnessed a significant shutdown on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

This response came in adherence to the directive issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in protest against the Federal government’s removal of fuel subsidy. To ensure complete compliance, government offices, courts, and select financial institutions were securely locked, with labor leaders actively monitoring the strike’s progress.

While a few banks initially remained open for customers in the State capital, government offices and courts remained deserted. Eventually, some of the banks also decided to join the strike in solidarity.

Comrade Tunde Joseph, the Chairman of the State Trade Union Congress (TUC), confirmed that his union did not participate in the strike, citing opposition from the national body to which they are affiliated.

Although Comrade Murysla Saheed Olayinka, the State Chairman of the NLC, could not be reached for comment at the time of this report, Comrade Kayode Ehindero, Chairman of the National Union of Agriculture and Allied Employees, regarded the strike as a success.

He said “our union is on strike. NLC is supposed to be on strike.

“I have carried out picketing for our branches to ensure that everybody is at home. Some banks are not working, it shows that the strike is a success.”
