During the Ramadan fasting month, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has granted clemency to 33 inmates from various correctional centres in the state.

Alhassan Sule Mamudo, the Information Officer of the Yobe State Ministry of Justice, shared this development in a statement issued in Damaturu on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the governor’s decision to pardon the inmates was based on the recommendation of the Yobe State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Saleh Samanja.

Prior to the inmates’ release, the Advisory Council conducted visits to the Potiskum, Nguru, and Gashu’a Correctional Services to assess and determine those deserving of the executive pardon. The Attorney General explained that the council thoroughly deliberated and compiled a list of 33 inmates for consideration by Governor Mai Mala Buni, who graciously accepted and approved their release through the executive order vested in him.

The statement further mentioned that on the eve of Ramadan, Governor Buni also authorised the distribution of food palliatives to all correctional facilities across the state. This initiative aims to ensure that the inmates can also partake in the blessings of the Ramadan season.
