Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has issued a stern warning against any actions that could disrupt peace between farmers and herders in rural communities.

Governor Buni delivered this warning after presiding over the swearing-in ceremony of local government caretaker management committee chairmen on Monday.

He urged the caretaker chairmen to give special attention to the relationship between farmers and herders, particularly during the period of farm harvests and herd migration.

“I want to emphasize that the government will not tolerate any actions that could disturb the peace between farmers and grazers in rural communities,” Governor Buni stated.

He advised herders to avoid encroaching on farmlands that are yet to be harvested, while also urging farmers not to block cattle routes and hinder the free movement of livestock.

Governor Buni highlighted the state’s efforts to enhance food sufficiency and security, calling on the caretaker chairmen to support farmers in their respective local government areas in embracing irrigation farming.

“The state government is ready to partner with and support all councils involved in irrigation farming,” he emphasized.

However, Governor Buni made it clear that accountability would not be compromised, and any diversion or mismanagement of public resources would not be tolerated. He directed the State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to oversee the performance of the management committees.

“You should adhere to our policy of cost-effective governance. Make governance less expensive and allocate more resources to projects and programs that directly impact the lives of the people,” Governor Buni urged the chairmen.

It was previously reported that the Yobe State House of Assembly extended the tenure of the local government caretaker management committee chairmen for an additional six months.
