Femi Fani-Kayode, a former aviation minister, has expressed his sadness and discomfort regarding the decision of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

As reported by Vistanaij Media, the military governments of the three countries announced their immediate withdrawal from ECOWAS.

In a joint statement, the leaders of the Sahel nations stated that their departure from ECOWAS was a “sovereign decision” that would be implemented without delay.

It is worth recalling that all three countries were previously suspended from ECOWAS, with Niger and Mali facing severe sanctions.

In recent times, the military juntas have solidified their positions and formed an “Alliance of Sahel States”.

Fani-Kayode wrote on X, “The withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from ECOWAS is a sad and unfortunate development. The fact that they have formed a hostile confederation right on our northern border is also troubling and has serious implications for our security.”

He further added, “May God restore the brotherhood and unity that we once enjoyed in our sub-region, and may He preserve the peace.”
