Chinedu Onah, the Deputy Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, has called upon the three tiers of government to raise the salaries of civil servants in order to mitigate the impact of the current economic hardship in Nigeria.

Onah made this plea while speaking to reporters after an event in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state on Friday.

He expressed his belief that civil servants in the country should be treated with fairness, just like politicians, but lamented that this was not the case.

Onah argued that the current salary levels of civil servants in the country are inadequate to cope with the economic challenges, particularly considering the rise in food prices, increased school fees, and other expenses.

“The federal and state governments need to understand the realities of our country, and the workers should be treated fairly. They should enjoy the same benefits that politicians do,” Onah stated.

He emphasized the need for an increase in the salaries of civil servants, highlighting that individuals receiving N30,000 or N40,000 per month cannot afford school fees of N100,000 for their children. He further explained that if a person has two or four children in school, they would struggle to meet their basic needs.

“On my part, I am among those advocating for civil servants to be well remunerated so that they can solve their problems. Nigeria is facing difficult times, and if you travel outside Ebonyi, you will realise that the challenges are even greater. It becomes evident that we are fortunate to be in Ebonyi,” Onah added.
