Atiku Urges Probe into Allegation of Budget Padding by Ningi
Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, has urged authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the allegation of budget padding amounting to N3.7 trillion made by suspended Bauchi Central senator, Abdul Ningi.
Expressing his views on a social media platform, the former Vice President emphasized that Ningi’s suspension does not silence the serious accusation of fiscal corruption within the Senate.
“Atiku highlighted the unacceptable nature of denying the allegation,” stating, “In recent days, allegations have emerged questioning the integrity of the 2024 Appropriation Act, which serves as the foundation for our nation’s annual planning and development.”
He further pointed out that a fiscal policy analytics and advocacy organization unequivocally confirmed a troubling lack of transparency within the 2024 Appropriation Act.
Atiku expressed concern over the sudden suspension of the whistle-blower senator without sufficient explanation, which has intensified the crisis and left more questions than answers.
He demanded an immediate and thorough investigation into the allegations, emphasizing that appropriation is a critical aspect of governance. Any deviation from serving the interests of the people will be met with strong opposition.
According to Atiku, denials are unacceptable, and the suspension of one senator cannot silence accusations of corruption and illegal fiscal expenditure by the federal government.
Without a clear explanation to the Nigerian people, he stated that the allegations must be treated as outright fraud.
The accusation of budget padding amounting to N3 trillion cannot be dismissed lightly by the government, Atiku asserted.
Given the current hardships faced by the nation, a padded budget translates into increased hunger, poverty, insecurity, energy crises, forex instability, and soaring living costs.
Atiku emphasized that the people of Nigeria cannot afford to ignore allegations that worsen the already dire economic situation.
