The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) successfully restored the national power grid after a system disturbance occurred at 4:28 pm on Thursday, 28th March 2024, during the Easter holidays.

As previously reported by Vistanaij Media, Nigerians experienced a nationwide blackout on Thursday due to the collapse of the national grid.

However, TCN, through its General Public Affairs spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, issued a statement confirming that the grid was fully restored by 10:00 pm on Thursday.

Mbah explained that the disturbance was caused by an imbalance in grid stability, which was further aggravated by the sudden tripping of Egbin generation turbine 3.

According to the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo, the system disturbance was triggered by a significant reduction in generation capacity, primarily due to gas constraints. This reduction resulted in a rapid decline in system frequency, leading to an abrupt imbalance in the grid.

The additional loss of 167MW load caused by the tripping of Egbin generation turbine 3 ultimately led to the collapse of the grid.

Mbah reassured that the grid has been successfully recovered and is currently stable, with all generated power being transmitted to distribution load centres nationwide.

It is important to note that Nigeria’s power supply has been consistently inadequate since January 2024, posing ongoing challenges for the country.
