Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, endorsing frontrunner Donald Trump on Sunday.

DeSantis made the announcement just two days before the New Hampshire primary, where he trailed far behind Trump and former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley.

In a social media post, DeSantis stated, “I can’t ask our supporters to volunteer their time and donate their resources if we don’t have a clear path to victory. Accordingly, I am today suspending my campaign.”

DeSantis emphasized Trump’s superiority over the current incumbent, Joe Biden, stating, “He has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old Republican Guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents.”

Following his announcement, DeSantis canceled a campaign event in New Hampshire and remained in Tallahassee, Florida.

Despite a second-place finish at the Iowa caucuses, where he narrowly beat out Haley, DeSantis has struggled to gain traction in New Hampshire. According to a CNN/University of New Hampshire poll conducted between January 16 and 19, DeSantis was polling at 6%, while Trump held 50% and Haley had 39%.

Haley responded to DeSantis’ announcement by stating that the GOP primary contest is now a “two-person race.”

DeSantis’ campaign has faced internal conflicts and strategic missteps, leading to staff layoffs and canceled media appearances. The campaign experienced ongoing infighting, and reports suggest that staff had lost faith in the campaign well before its conclusion.
