Rights Group Criticizes Osun JUSUN’s Response to Seven-day Ultimatum
The Osun State chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has dismissed the ultimatum issued by the World Institute of Peace (WIP) as laughable and criticized the group for being unidentified and faceless.
In response to the WIP’s press conference, where its Executive Director, Lamina Omotoyosi, issued a seven-day ultimatum to JUSUN and striking judiciary workers in the state, the Osun JUSUN Secretary, Idris Adeniran, released a counter statement. Adeniran refuted the claim made by Omotoyosi that the JUSUN National Secretariat did not support the strike, calling it false.
Adeniran emphasized that the judiciary workers in the state were concerned that the WIP did not address the persecution of JUSUN members. He stated that the union was determined to fight against the oppression and dehumanization of its members.
Regarding the WIP’s lack of consultation and their false claim about the JUSUN National Body’s stance, Adeniran stated, “The Institute claimed that the National Body of our union had dissociated herself from our industrial action, and which is a complete lie. For the records, the Osun State chapter of JUSUN has the backing of the national headquarters of the union on this industrial action.”
Adeniran also expressed surprise that the self-proclaimed human rights organization was previously unaware of the persecution faced by JUSUN members but suddenly decided to intervene.
While sympathizing with those affected by the strike, particularly lawyers and litigants, JUSUN reiterated its determination to combat oppression and dehumanization. The union thanked the Osun State Government for intervening in the salary deprivation issue and assured the government that they would consider resuming work once the 2023 wardrobe allowance is paid and the oppression by the State Chief Judge ceases.
