Renowned social commentator Reno Omokri has responded to President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint his son-in-law, Oladimeji Ojo, as the Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA).

According to reports, Ojo was among those selected following the President’s approval to reconstitute the Executive Management teams of agencies under the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

The appointment has drawn attention, particularly on social media, with some Nigerians expressing concerns about Nigeria being treated as a family enterprise.

However, Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, believes that as long as the appointee is capable of fulfilling the assigned responsibilities, there is nothing inherently wrong with the appointment.

Ojo, a former member of the House of Representatives, is married to Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, the President’s daughter.

In a statement, Omokri expressed his views on the matter, stating, “There is absolutely nothing wrong with President Tinubu appointing his son-in-law as the head of the Federal Housing Authority, as long as the man in question is qualified for the job. That is not nepotism.”

He went on to provide examples from American political history, highlighting instances where family members were appointed to key positions. Omokri noted that President John F. Kennedy appointed his brother, Robert F. Kennedy, as his Attorney General and trusted aide, and President Donald Trump nominated his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, as a Senior Advisor to the President and head of the American Office of Innovation.

Omokri further pointed out that several other American Presidents, besides Trump and Kennedy, have appointed family members to executive roles within the U.S. Federal Government.

The commentator stressed that nepotism only becomes an issue when there is a consistent pattern of granting advantages to relatives or friends over more qualified individuals. He emphasized that a single incident does not establish a pattern of nepotism.
