Osimhen Unfazed by Goal Drought as Nigeria Advances in AFCON 2023

In a recent report, Nigeria secured a triumph in the quarter-final match at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, courtesy of a lone goal netted by Ademola Lookman late in the first half. However, another goal by Osimhen, connecting with a free-kick from Lookman, faced disapproval due to offside.

During an interview with Canal Plus Afrique, Osimhen underscored his team-centric mindset, affirming his commitment to the team’s success over personal achievements. While expressing his eagerness to contribute through scoring, he also emphasized his readiness to defend and fight for the team, should goal-scoring opportunities be limited. Osimhen stressed the significance of cultivating the right mindset for winning the tournament, considering it a monumental achievement for both him and the nation. The upcoming semi-final against either Cape Verde or South Africa provides Nigeria with an opportunity to secure their fourth continental title, the first since 2013.

Despite being substituted in stoppage time due to several knocks during the match, Osimhen praised the team’s quality and their potential to reach the final. Lookman, an Atalanta forward and former England Under-21 international, gained attention for his decisive goal against Angola and a brace in the 2-0 victory over Cameroon in the previous round. In contrast, Osimhen has faced a goal drought since Nigeria’s opening 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea.

Moses Simon, credited with assisting Lookman’s goal and named the man of the match, dismissed concerns about Osimhen’s goal drought. He emphasized the team’s collective focus on securing victories rather than individual accolades. Coach Jose Peseiro expressed contentment with the players’ performance, acknowledging their dedication and determination throughout the tournament despite the challenges they encountered.
