The Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, has issued a cautionary advisory to Nigerian citizens residing in the country.

The advisory, released on Monday, was prompted by “potentially inflammatory” online comments made by some South Africans against Nigerians living in South Africa, particularly in light of the upcoming AFCON semi-final match.

The High Commission urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and exhibit good conduct before, during, and after the match.

The statement from the High Commission highlighted that certain online comments contained veiled threats against Nigerians, including references to Nigerian jollof rice and provocations if the Bafana Bafana were to lose to the Super Eagles.

In response, the High Commission advised the Nigerian community to carefully choose where they watch the match, especially in public places, and to refrain from engaging in loud, riotous, or provocative celebrations if the Super Eagles emerge victorious.

Furthermore, the advisory emphasized the need for Nigerians to maintain their reputation for good conduct, abide by the law, and report any provocations to the appropriate authorities instead of retaliating.
