President Joe Biden of the United States has officially signed a bill into law that aims to ban the popular social media app, TikTok.

The bill, previously passed by the US Congress, mandates TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, based in China, to sell the app within a nine-month timeframe. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in a ban on TikTok within the United States.

President Biden signed the bill as part of the $95 billion foreign aid package approved by Congress this week, which also includes additional funding for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan. The signing took place on Wednesday.

In response, TikTok has expressed its intention to challenge the new law through legal means. TikTok spokesperson Alex Haurek released a statement labeling the law as “unconstitutional” and affirming the company’s determination to contest it in court.

It is worth noting that TikTok successfully won a legal battle against former President Donald Trump’s attempt in 2020 to force the sale of the app. Trump had issued an executive order that would have prohibited any US-based transactions with ByteDance if the company did not divest TikTok within 45 days.
