Introducing Folashodun Shonubi, the Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria

Mr. Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi has assumed the role of acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as of June 9, 2023.

Who is Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi?

Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi was born on March 7, 1962. He pursued his higher education at the University of Lagos, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from 1978 to 1983. He went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Production Engineering from the same university in 1985. Shonubi then shifted his focus to finance, completing a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) with a specialization in Finance between 1988 and 1989.

Shonubi began his professional career as a Consultant Engineer at Mek-ind Associates, where he worked from 1984 to 1989. He then served as a Marketing Executive at Inlaks Computers Limited from 1989 to 1990. Subsequently, he joined Citibank Nigeria Limited as the Head of Treasury Operations from 1990 to 1993. Afterward, he became a Supervising Consultant at Agusto & Co. Ltd from 1993 to 1996. In 1999, Shonubi joined MBC International Limited as the Deputy General Manager of Banking Operations & Information Technology. Later that year, he transitioned to First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Limited, where he held the position of Vice-President of Operations & Information Technology until 2002.

In 2003, Shonubi moved to Ecobank Nigeria Plc as an Executive Director overseeing Operations & Information Technology. He then served as the Director of Information Technology and Corporate Services at Renaissance Securities Nigeria Limited in 2007. From September 2009 to April 2012, Shonubi worked as an Executive Director responsible for Operations, Technology, and Services at Union Bank of Nigeria Limited. He subsequently assumed the role of Managing Director/CEO at Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc from May 2012 until October 2018. Since December 9, 2019, Shonubi has served as the Deputy Governor of Operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and represented the CBN Governor on the Board of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). He is married and has children.

As of June 9, 2023, Shonubi has taken on the position of Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
