The Lagos State government has declared the closure of several major roads in preparation for the upcoming Lagos City Marathon on Saturday.

The State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, revealed in a statement that certain routes would be temporarily inaccessible to motorists during the sporting event.

Between 5:00 am and 2:00 pm, significant routes including Funsho Williams Avenue, Ikorodu Road, Gbagada to Third Mainland Bridge, Dolphin Road to Alfred Rewane Road, Falomo Roundabout to Bourdillon Road, Lekki Bridge to Freedom Way, and Akin-Adesola to Ahmadu Bello Way will be closed. Alternative routes have been arranged to ensure smooth traffic flow during the marathon.

Drivers can choose to take Apongbon Bridge towards Eko Bridge, passing through Costain Roundabout, Iponri, and Bode Thomas. Alternatively, they can opt for Eko Bridge through Costain Roundabout and Apapa Road to reach Oyingbo/Jebba, and then access Herbert Macaulay for their desired destination.

The 3rd Mainland Bridge will be inaccessible to motorists from midnight until the conclusion of the marathon. Drivers can pass through Victoria Island to reach Independence Bridge and CMS Bridge, allowing access to Apongbon towards Ijora-Olopa and Iddo, as well as Oyingbo to connect to Herbert Macaulay Road.

Trips departing from Ikorodu Road and Funsho Williams Avenue towards Lagos Island are not affected by the diversion. Traffic management officers will be stationed at diversion points to ensure smooth traffic flow and motorist safety. The government advises drivers without urgent matters on the marathon diversion routes to avoid these areas and assures the resumption of normal traffic conditions on the 3rd Mainland Bridge once the marathon concludes.
