Diezani Alison-Madueke, the former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum, is facing charges related to bribery as brought forth by the UK National Crime Agency (NCA).

The NCA’s official website has conveyed that Alison-Madueke, who is accused of purportedly receiving bribes in exchange for granting significant oil and gas contracts worth millions of pounds, is scheduled to make an appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on the 2nd of October.

These allegations have cast a shadow over her role as a prominent figure in Nigeria’s petroleum sector. The charges, brought forward by the UK’s NCA, suggest a grave breach of ethical conduct within the industry. The NCA’s decision to press charges signifies a commitment to addressing and redressing such acts of corruption.

“We suspect Diezani Alison-Madueke abused her power in Nigeria and accepted financial rewards for awarding multi-million-pound contracts,” Andy Kelly, Head of the National Crime Agency’s (NCA) International Corruption Unit, said. “These charges are a milestone in what has been a thorough and complex international investigation.” 

Alison-Madueke held a pivotal role within the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

At the age of 63, she also assumed the position of President for the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), in addition to her role as Nigeria’s petroleum minister from 2010 to 2015.
