Daniel Bwala, former spokesman for the Atiku-Okowa presidential campaign, has strongly criticised Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, accusing him of plunging the state into ungovernability with a staggering debt burden.

Bwala alleges that El-Rufai’s administration left behind a debt of $587 million and N85 billion, creating immense financial challenges for the current Governor, Uba Sani. Governor Sani recently revealed that he inherited a massive debt burden, along with 115 contractual liabilities, making it extremely difficult to meet the state’s financial obligations, including paying workers’ salaries.

Expressing his concerns at a town hall meeting in Kaduna, Bwala highlighted the detrimental impact of such a high debt profile on the state’s governance. He called upon Governor Sani to find innovative solutions to effectively govern Kaduna State despite the challenging financial circumstances.

In his post on X, Bwala emphasized that a leader can make a state ungovernable through two primary means: either by allowing insecurity to thrive or by burdening the state with an overwhelming debt load. He expressed shock at the reported debt figures and drew attention to the alarming number of over 2,000 unfenced schools in the state, which he believes pose a serious risk to the safety of schoolchildren.

Bwala urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the financial mismanagement in Kaduna State, suggesting that the reported debt burden and the lack of necessary security measures in schools constitute crimes against humanity. He called for swift action to address these issues and hold the responsible parties accountable.
