Femi Falana spills on why his son, Falz, constantly embarrasses the government and reveals the source of his fighting spirit

During an event in Lagos on Sunday, April 2, renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana SAN, revealed why his son, Folarin Falana, also known as Falz, is always at odds with the government. Falana explained that his son’s confrontational attitude towards the government stemmed from his experiences growing up.

Falana revealed that his frequent arrests as a legal practitioner always bothered his son, who viewed him as a criminal. He recalled a conversation with someone who asked him to speak to his son about stopping his constant embarrassment of the government. Falana retorted by asking which government he was referring to and offering to give the person his son’s number so that they could speak to him directly.

Falana attributed his son’s fighting spirit to the fact that he grew up watching his father frequently getting arrested. When Falz was six years old, he asked his mother why his father was always being arrested when their teacher had taught them that only criminals were arrested. His mother explained that in Nigeria, under the military regime, only two sets of political suspects existed, namely those who were out to expose the government’s criminality and those who supported the government. Falana’s son was thus exposed to the realities of Nigeria’s political climate from a young age, and this shaped his worldview
