Femi Falana, a human rights lawyer, has made a firm commitment to ensure that the soldier arrested by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for a road traffic offense, faces prosecution.

In a report by Vistanaij Media on Tuesday, it was revealed that Sanwo-Olu apprehended some individuals riding motorcycles in the wrong direction along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The governor was en route to the inauguration of the Femi Gbajabiamila Conference Centre at the Ojo campus of the Lagos State University (LASU) when the incident occurred.

One of the offenders, who identified himself as a soldier, may have assumed he would be released on that basis. However, the governor ordered the security personnel to detain him.

While the security operatives escorted the offender away, Sanwo-Olu remarked, “Put him there, let your father come and rescue you.”

Appearing on Channels Television on Wednesday, Falana highlighted that members of the armed forces in Nigeria often consider themselves above the law.

“In our country, men of the armed forces believe, as if we’re still under the military dictatorship, that they’re above the law,” he stated.

He also referenced previous incidents involving the military and law enforcement, where soldiers attacked and killed police officers. Falana emphasized the need for a country governed by the rule of law and equality before the law.

Falana expressed his determination to mobilize the human rights community to pressure the Lagos State Government to ensure the soldier in question faces trial for his actions.
