Nigeria’s secret police, known as the Department of State Services (DSS), has announced that it has commenced an investigation into the shooting of a fashion designer at Garki International Market on Thursday evening. The incident involved DSS personnel who were not authorised to be on duty.

According to Vistanaij News, the situation escalated when a DSS officer, brought in by a customer of the fashion designer to intimidate him for failing to deliver garments, ended up shooting the designer.

Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who is based in the Lake Chad area, shared a tweet via his X handle, which included a video and photos of the event. The tweet stated that not only was the designer shot, but a stray bullet also struck a sales girl who was in her shop at the time.

The tweet read, “On the evening of Sept. 7, 2023, a woman called upon DSS personnel to arrest her tailor for failing to deliver her clothes. They arrived and ended up shooting him; a stray bullet also hit an innocent sales girl in her shop.”

The incident caused outrage among the market traders, who tried to prevent the DSS personnel from leaving the scene. The officers fled as the traders pelted their vehicle with stones.

In response, DSS issued a statement via its spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, saying that it has initiated an investigation into the incident. The statement explained that the DSS was responding to a reported mob attack at the market and assured the public that details of the inquiry would be made available as soon as possible.

Furthermore, the service vowed not to hesitate in taking disciplinary action against any staff found to be in breach of standard operating procedures.
