Osita Chidoka, a former Minister of Aviation, expressed his disappointment with President Bola Tinubu’s recent remark about Nigeria’s bribe-seeking officials.

During a meeting in Qatar, Tinubu urged investors to report any Nigerian official who solicits bribes from them. However, Chidoka, speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics show, accused Tinubu of negatively portraying Nigeria in the eyes of potential investors.

Chidoka stated, “It was an unfortunate statement. I felt embarrassed that the President was perpetuating the demarketing of Nigeria, which is reminiscent of President Buhari’s approach. There are many Nigerians who would never ask for a bribe. The individuals who engage in such practices are in the minority. The President’s role is to promote Nigeria and act as the country’s chief salesperson.”

He further placed blame on the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Information for failing to establish a positive narrative for the government. Chidoka emphasized the importance of having a theme that focuses on promoting investments, attracting foreign exchange, and presenting Nigeria’s success story as a thriving democracy.

“It is not entirely the President’s fault. The government should have a clear theme, such as being pro-investment and actively working to improve Nigeria’s image. We should highlight Africa’s rising narrative, showcasing Nigeria’s ability to sustain democracy for almost 25 years under different mandates,” Chidoka added.
