Despite the controversy surrounding the appointment of caretaker committees by Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, the state assembly has proceeded to confirm the nominees.

This confirmation comes in direct contradiction to the Senate’s call on the Federal Government to withhold statutory allocations from local councils that are not democratically elected nationwide.

The Senate passed this resolution following a motion titled “Urgent need to Halt the Erosion of Democracy and Dissolution of Elected councils in Benue State,” which was sponsored by Senator Abba Moro during Friday’s plenary session.

Senator Moro emphasized that replacing elected councils with caretaker committees goes against the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The Senate urged the Governor of Benue State to reconsider the dissolution of the councils, the formation of caretaker committees, and reinstate the elected officials.

However, in defiance of this directive, the Benue State Assembly has gone ahead to confirm 21 out of the 23 nominees for the caretaker committees.

The nominees from Oju and Obi have been temporarily stepped down. Further updates regarding this matter are expected.
