Governor Alia Issues Immediate Suspension of All Mining Activities in Benue

The Miners Association of Nigeria, Benue Chapter, Governor Hyacinth Alia has announced the suspension of all mining activities in Benue State. The suspension will remain in effect until comprehensive data on the miners has been compiled.

Governor Alia further instructed the Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee (MIREMCO) to promptly initiate the process of documenting information on all miners operating within the state.

The decision to conduct this revalidation exercise stems from concerns over security threats associated with mining activities. The governor expressed his dissatisfaction with the contamination of water sources, particularly in the affected areas, such as Kwande, which has negatively impacted the residents.

Governor Alia emphasized the importance of upholding the law and protecting the well-being of the people. He called upon security agencies and the joint task force on illegal mining to ensure strict compliance with regulations, thereby enhancing public welfare and increasing internally generated revenue.

“Our administration is committed to safeguarding the lives and property of the people. Any form of illegality will not be tolerated by the state government,” Governor Alia stated firmly.
