Winners at the 2022 Commonwealth Games
The 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham, UK, came to an end on Sunday, August 7. Team Nigeria amassed 12 gold, nine silver, and 14 bronze medals, bringing the total number of medals won at the competition to 35.
Nigerian competitors broke numerous records at the games; medals were won in an unprecedented rush, especially on the last day of the event. Amazingly, female competitors who dominated Birmingham’s tracks and gymnasiums and etched their names in the competition’s history took home all of the gold medals.
In the women’s 100-meter hurdles final, Tobi Amusan sprinted to the finish line in 12.30 seconds to create a Commonwealth Games record. Ese Brume set a record in the long jump with a leap of 7 metres. The team of Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, and Grace Nwokocha effortlessly won the women’s 4 x 100-metre race while also setting a new African record with a time of 42.10 seconds.
Adijat Olarinoye, Rafiatu Lawal, and Alice Oluwafemilayo, among other lifters, also broke CWG records in their respective weight classes.
Nigeria went to the competition with 93 athletes and participated in 7 sporting categories, which had 41 men and 52 women as the Nigerian contingent.
