Following the recent airstrikes conducted by the Nigerian Army that resulted in the death of over 100 individuals, the villagers of Tudun Biri in the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State have taken legal action against the Nigerian Government.

In the lawsuit, filed on December 8 by their counsel, Mukhtar Usman Esq., the villagers are seeking compensation of N33 billion. They are also demanding a public apology to be published in at least three national newspapers.

The purpose of the lawsuit is to uphold the survivors’ fundamental right to life. Among the requested reliefs is a declaration that the aerial bombardment carried out by the personnel under the command and supervision of the Chief of Army Staff on December 3, 2023, during the Islamic Maulud celebration in Tudun Biri, Igabi Local Government Area, constitutes a violation of the victims’ fundamental right to life as stipulated in Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Article 10(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights (Ratification Enforcement) Act (Cap 10) LFN 2010.

A date for the hearing of the case has not yet been scheduled.
