The Senate has revealed that the security chiefs who were summoned last week to address the escalating insecurity in the country will be questioned on February 7 and 8.

The objective is to find effective measures to curb criminal activities in Nigeria.

Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (APC, Lagos East), the chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, made this announcement on Tuesday. He also noted that the planned meeting with the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has been rescheduled to Friday due to the engagement with the security chiefs.

Last Tuesday, the Senate summoned the security chiefs to appear before them in plenary to provide necessary explanations concerning the deteriorating security situation in the country. Similarly, the Senate’s Committee on Banking summoned the CBN governor to discuss the state of the nation’s economy and the depreciation of the naira.

However, the committee members gathered at the scheduled venue for the meeting with the CBN governor in Room 211 from 3 pm to 4:30 pm but decided to postpone the session to Friday.

Senator Abiru, the committee chairman, explained the reason for the postponement, stating, “After waiting for close to two hours for the CBN governor for the planned interface, we have resolved to postpone it to Friday this week at 9 am sharp. The decision to reschedule the interface with the CBN governor arose from the fact that he and other officials responsible for managing the nation’s economy have been engaged with our colleagues in the House of Representatives since morning, without knowing when the session would end.”

He further added, “We would have chosen Wednesday or Thursday this week as an alternative day for the interface, but the Senate, as a whole, has scheduled these two days for critical and constructive engagements with the Service Chiefs. Consequently, we have settled on Friday this week for the interface with the CBN governor at 9 am sharp. We will communicate this change to the CBN governor and possibly other government officials involved in managing the economy.”
